As a consulting professional with twenty years of domestic and international experience, I, like you, have seen a lot of things go well, but probably more things go wrong as I studied consulting solutions delivered to client companies. All service providers mean well, but professional services organizations and consulting firms don’t consistently provide the quality of service that clients expect and desire.

When I was doing the research for my doctorate, I wanted to study something that would help me consistently deliver the highest quality services to my clients. I didn’t know if such an area of study was practical or possible, but I did know this: The quality of consulting services being provided by consulting firms and professional services companies, more often than not, fell short of the clients’ expectations.

What I came to understand as a result of my research and experience was that the challenges associated with consistently delivering high service quality resulted from a number of factors within the service provider’s organization including ineffective planning, inefficient processes and a lack of in-depth training and development. Moreover, there is often a lack of clear alignment between the firm’s service offerings and delivery approach, and the wants and desires of the client. In Six Sigma terms, this is commonly referred to as a failure to hear the Voice of the Customer. It was also clearer than ever that professional service quality is the cornerstone of the competitiveness, profitability and success of the firm.

Professional services companies and consulting firms stand to gain significantly from a focus on service quality in the areas of great references, higher profits, lower costs, repeat business and enhanced market share.
